§ As shipping costs rise, "Made in U.S.A." makes more sense
The soaring cost of
shipping goods from overseas could be good news for American workers, the
Wall Street Journal Reports. "In a world of triple-digit oil prices,
distance costs money," one economist says, and that is leading some
companies to abandon low-cost countries such as China and shift their
manufacturing back to the U.S. The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) (6/13)
§ We need more oil production
Almost two-thirds of those surveyed believe
unethical behavior in the supply chain is responsible for rapidly rising
oil prices, according to a CNN/Opinion Research Poll released Wednesday,
but experts say it's more complicated than that. Production isn't growing
as much as demand is and regulations in the U.S. place restrictions on
drilling. "We need to develop more sources of oil, not only globally
but also in the United States," said one expert. CNNMoney.com (6/11)
§ E-Verify system detailed
President George W.
Bush has signed an executive order requiring all companies that do business
with the federal government to use the E-Verify system to check the legal
status of all employees. Critics of the system argue that flaws could
unfairly punish workers who were born in the U.S. The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) (6/12)

§ Self-respect can boost performance, enhance leadership
Small-business
owners can undermine their leadership potential by being too self-critical,
expecting more than they should of themselves or setting standards too
high, says David Peck, president of Leadership Unleashed in San Francisco.
A personal reassessment can lead to greater self-care and respect. BusinessWeek/Today's Tip (6/5)
§ How good a listener are you?
Many people think
they are good listeners, when in fact, most aren't, writes sales trainer
Hal Becker. As an exercise in gauging your own skills in this area, ask
yourself how proficient you are at remembering driving directions you don't
write down and how well you can recall the names of people you are
introduced to. More listening and less talking is the key to good sales,
Becker says. American City Business Journals (6/9)
